GET THE CONCENTRATION RIGHT

Solution preparation & dilution

Use the molecular weight of the actual salt, hydrate or solvate supplied.

Select a reference match to fill formula and MW, or enter your own values.

How it works

For preparation from a solid, choose the molecular weight of the actual salt or hydrate. If purity is supplied, divide the pure-solute mass by the purity fraction. For stock dilution, measure stock solution and dilute to the final volume, rather than adding that full volume of solvent.

Formula: m = C × V × MW / p, where p is purity as a fraction (0 < p ≤ 1). For dilution, V₁ = C₂V₂ / C₁ with consistent concentration and volume units.

Worked example: Dilute a 1 M stock to 100 mM in 100 mL: V₁ = (0.100 M × 100 mL) / 1 M = 10 mL stock. Dilute to 100 mL total solution. This simple dilution requires target concentration no greater than stock concentration.
